A Swedish botanist named the chrysanthemum after the Greek words chrysos, gold, and anthemon, flower. The etymology originates in Asia. In both Chinese and Japanese, the term for chrysanthemum translates as “gold flower.” While the meaning of the flower’s name is universal, the symbolism is not. The chrysanthemum has been associated with everything from life to death across ancient Asian cultures and modern America.
