Forest degradation and deforestation continue at an alarming rate. Since 1990, an estimated 420 million hectares of forest have been lost to other land uses, although the rate of deforestation has slowed during the last three decades. Between 2015 and 2020, deforestation is expected to have occurred at a rate of 10 million hectares per year, down from 16 million hectares per year in the 1990s. Since 1990, the global primary forest cover has fallen by more than 80 million hectares.
